The look of the game is certainly its biggest selling point, to me. The overall sound design is really impressive and adds a lot to the game. It was the perfect preparation for the game and I would consider just listening to it on its own as background music when relaxing. I didn’t go in prepared to spend any time focused on the music, but as soon as the title screen opened I was blasted with a celestial fantasy track. The music in Astral Ascent was actually a real standout aspect of the game.

I had a lot of fun with the combat and I look forward to playing the full version since the playable characters that weren’t available seem more my playstyle, one is a mage and the other is a gunslinger.

The controls feel very optimized to a controller, which is alright but I happened not to have one. Both of their playstyles felt incredibly smooth and unique. Kiran is a monk-type character with more melee and short-ranged attacks like punches and fire breath. Ayla is a ninja-type character with more ranged abilities like a giant shuriken. Two of the four playable characters were available during my playthrough of the demo. These can be lifesavers every time you find one, and really make exploring each level rewarding. Lastly, there are gambits, upgrades you can find during each run that offer powerful upgrades like lifesteal or burning damage on all attacks.I was grateful that this ability was always available and on a short cooldown. I also discovered a replacement, an energy wave that stuns enemies. The default ability is a small gravity orb that gathers enemies. Players also have a defensive ability.I found this to be the hardest skill to adjust to, since it feels a bit awkward to use on the keyboard. Players can dash to dodge enemy attacks.

This I really like because it forces players to be cognizant of the order of abilities, and to make sure the next few abilities are appropriate for the fight. Players can organize abilities found throughout the stages into a 4 ability rotation, but must use them sequentially.

  • Each character has a pool of signature abilities and access to a wider pool of generic abilities.
  • Each character has a basic attack combo, which I was thrilled could be used in the air to slow descent and easily handle airborne enemies.
  • Overall, all of the combat systems are very successful: There were enough scenes scattered throughout the demo that it felt like I was learning about the world and its inhabitants.Ĭombat is necessarily the cornerstone of any rogue-lite as a game hinging on repeatable combat content. I expect we’ll see much more of the story in the complete game.Ĭharacters, many of them shopkeepers, gods, and other playable characters all contribute their respective stories and personalities to the overall narrative.

The demo is able to spend more time developing some characters and the various battle, archive, and cosmetic systems available. The demo features a boss battle against Taurus, one of the 12 gods of the Zodiac, but the narrative of escaping an astral prison doesn’t have a great chance to develop during the demo. Players then begin their journey into the Fragmented Plains where they’ll encounter enemies and gods alike. This serves as an introduction to many of the characters, and the combat tutorial. The game begins with Ayla, one of the playable characters, completing her training with her combat instructors. Some features were unavailable, including some shops, the summoning mechanic, and two of the four playable characters. The demo included the beginning of the story, access to the main hub and some of the shops, and the first area of the game called the Fragmented Plains. “Astral Ascent is a 2D platformer rogue-lite with four worlds to escape, if you can beat the Zodiacs, 12 mighty bosses! Solo or with a friend, play with 4 unique Heroes and create your own build thanks to dozens of original spells.” Astral Ascent already has a successful Kickstarter campaign that launched the week of April 1, 2021. Its release date is to be announced, but you can follow its development and learn more through the Hibernian Workshop Twitter account.
